Run the downloaded UMVPN-anyconnect file to install the client. Follow the prompts. Note: If you are using macOS Big Sur, you will need to open security preferences when installing Cisco Anyconnect. How to Download VPN Software
- All active University faculty, staff, and student employees have access to Boise State’s VPN service.
- Download the VPN software.
If you’re on campus, download the VPN software using this link.
If you’re off campus, download the VPN software using this link. - Log in to the Boise State VPN service using your Boise State account. (If you are unable to log in, please contact the Help Desk for assistance.)
- Click the AnyConnect link.
- Click the Start AnyConnect link.
- The Boise State VPN software (Cisco AnyConnect) will install and connect your computer securely to the Boise State network.
- If you are using macOS Big Sur, you may be prompted to open System Preferences > Security & Privacy and select Allow to load the “Cisco AnyConnect Socket Filter”:
- If the automatic installation fails, click the “Windows Desktop” or “Mac OS X 10.6+” link to download and install the VPN software manually.
How to Use the VPN Software
Once you have the VPN software (Cisco AnyConnect) installed, here’s how to work securely and connect to the Boise State network:
- Connect to the Internet via Wi-Fi or cable like you always do.
- Launch the Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility software.
Windows: Start > All Programs > Cisco > Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client > Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client
Mac: Finder > Applications > Cisco > Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client - Enter either the on-campus VPN address or the off-campus VPN address, depending on your location:
On-campus VPN address: bsuvpn-oncampus.boisestate.edu
Off-campus VPN address: bsuvpn-offcampus.boisestate.edu - Sign in with your Boise State username and password.
- As of May 19, Boise State requires Duo multi-factor authentication when connecting to VPN. For information about enrolling and using Duo, visit the Multi-factor Authentication page.
Optional: Connect to Your Work Computer
You may use VPN in conjunction with Microsoft Remote Desktop to connect remotely to a Windows desktop or laptop computer.

Eduroam has been tested and verified working on Apple OSX, Microsoft Windows, Linux, Android, and Apple iOS.
Connecting to Eduroam
While each device configuration is different, they all follow the same basic directions:
- Select the wireless network eduroam from the list of wireless networks.
- Select Connect (check Connect automatically if you’d like).
- Enter your WUSTL Key username with an @wustl.edu after it.
- For example, if your WUSTL Key is jemurray you would enter jemurray@wustl.edu for the username.
- Enter your WUSTL Key password.
- You may be prompted to accept a certificate, select OK, Accept, Agree and Accept, Continue, or Ignore (it varies based on your device type).
- If a window appears requesting additional settings, complete as such:
- EAP Method: PEAP
- Phase 2 Authentication: MSCHAPv2
- Certificate: None or Unavailable
- Anonymous: Leave blank
- Username: WustlKeyUsername@wustl.edu
- Password: Wustl Key password
- Android users may need to select a CA certificate setting. Choose Do not validate (or Not Required or None, depending on your system). You may also need to specify your Phase 2 Authentication as MSCHAPv2.
- If a window appears requesting additional settings, complete as such:
- You are now connected to eduroam.
- If you are unable to connect following these instructions, you may have to check your advanced settings, by following the instructions.
- As a 3rd party service, there are times when the login might not work initially; trying again from a different location or an hour or two later typically works.
- For a list of participating Eduroam institutions, check the Eduroam website.
- VPN allows you to connect to University resources requiring a secure Washington University network connection to access.
- You must have WUSTL 2FA enabled for your account in order to use VPN. For more information, see it.wustl.edu/2fa
- Many tools do not require a VPN connection to access them. For example, Canvas, Zoom, Teams, Box, Outlook, and Office 365 apps. For a list of WashU systems that do and do not require VPN, view WashU Systems VPN Requirements (PDF).
- You will need to be granted access to use VPN. Your office computer will need to be configured to allow remote connections. (Does not apply to Danforth students)
To request VPN access, complete the online ServiceNow request form. New requests for VPN access are subject to departmental approval. (Does not apply to Danforth students)
